Jay Collins Band

A dynamic performer of saxophones, flutes, and vocals, Jay learned music on the job, not in a university. His early years were spent playing tenor sax on the west coast with the legendary jazz bassist, LeRoy Vinnegar, as well as other accomplished, experienced musicians. Shortly after moving to New York City, Mr. Collins recorded a CD for Reservoir Music with jazz greats Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid, Ben Riley, and Joe Locke. Along the way, he began performing on soprano sax and flute, and studying vocal techniques. Today, Jay is an in-demand player whose resume’ includes work with a diverse array of artists including Andrew Hill (historical jazz pianist), Gregg Allman & Friends, the Allman Brothers Band (rock icons), Jacky Terrasson (Blue Note Rec artist), and Bobby Sanabria (grammy-nominated Afro-Cuban drummer). The Jay Collins Band has performed at many NYC venues including the Museum of Modern Art, Smalls, Blue Note, Living Room, Birdland, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Mr. Collins has traveled the world as a U.S. Jazz Ambassador for the Kennedy Center. His present group, the Jay Collins Band, is a 5-member combo with New Orleans-style funk, poetry, blues and modern jazz mixed up into a powerful brew of original tunes. Think of Bob Dylan and John Coltrane in a band together, throw in some Dr. John, and you'll get the concept. People at our shows often remark how unique it is to see Jay belting out the songs with his gravel-edged voice, and then blowing up a storm on his saxes and his flute, all without missing a beat. Songs both serious and funny, and great musicians playing at the top of their game—that’s the Jay Collins Band.

QUOTES:
“… has the benefit of Jay Collins, the saxophonist and flutist who radiates charismatic authority. Collins wrote an excellent ballad for the record, Ebb & Flow, and as a musician he can rip it up in the athleticism of a bop context.
- New York Times

"I for one am totally inspired by this music created by Jay Collins and his quartet and I am sure you will be too."
- Joe Lovano, Blue Note recording artist

“Collins…is a great example of a player whose varied experiences nurture a deeper musical personality. He…kicks it groovy with an organ outfit, and blows outcat style with logic and grace.”
